Minneapolis Allows Islamic Prayers To Broadcast Throughout The City At All Hours

On Thursday, the Minneapolis City Council introduced a bill allowing up to five daily broadcasts of Islamic prayers throughout the community.

The City Council unanimously approved changes to sound ordinances that would allow mosques to transport calls to worship using” amplifying equipment” and struck a restriction on activity” between the hours of 7:00 am and 10:00 pm.” According to a report from CBS News Minnesota, Islamic worship facilities will now be able to broadcast the visits to worship as soon as 11:00 p.m. and as early as 3:30 am.

According to Council on American – Islamic Relations Minnesota Executive Director Jaylani Hussein, this is a legendary victory for religious freedom and diversity for our entire country. We applaud the Minneapolis City Council members for leading by example and urge additional towns to do the same.

The new sound legislation allows for calls to worship that last no longer than six minutes per hour, which is the common time needed for the adhan, an Islamic practice.

The calling to worship are a well-known aspect of daily life in many Middle Eastern countries. Mecca, one of the five main pillars of Islam, is the place in eastern Saudi Arabia from which Muhammad hails. Muslims pray there five times daily.

The plan will be signed by Minneapolis Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey, a voice told Axios. The largest community in Minnesota is home to a sizable Ethiopian immigrant population. The second Somali-American and native citizen of African descent to perform in Congress is Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents the town of Minneapolis and a few local suburbs.

According to a report from The Star Tribune, Minneapolis originally permitted the visits to worship last summer during Ramadan, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar during which Muslims are expected to fast from dawn until dusk.

The ringing of chapel bells is an assertion of Christians’ faith and the consolation that brings, according to Minneapolis Democrat Councilmember Jamal Osman,” for the belief of Muslims in Minneapolis, that is exactly the same objective of adhan service for Muslims.” Numerous Muslims in Minneapolis today have their faith recognized on an equal footing with everyone else.

According to a statement from The Sahan Journal, Osman and Minneapolis Democratic Councilmembers Aisha Chughtai and Jeremiah Ellison, who are both Muslims, were the ones who first proposed amending the sound regulations. Chughtai said on Thursday,” It is really important for us at the city to approach all issues from a lens of ensuring equal access for all people, and that’s’s what we’ve’ve really done here.” People of all faiths will benefit from this, it is said.

According to Pew Research Center data, Muslims make up slightly more than 1 % of the American population and are predicted to overtake Jews as the country’s’s second-largest religious group after Christians within the next 20 years. According to more recent Pew Research Center data, the religion is the fastest-growing religious group in the United States, with about 29 % of the people self-identifying as irreligious, agnostic, or unaffiliated.
