Minnesota Democratic Attorney General Compares Justice Clarence Thomas to ”Uncle Tom” Character
In a controversial statement, Minnesota Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison drew a comparison between Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and the infamous house slave character Stephen from Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 film Django Unchained. Ellison made these remarks while discussing Thomas’s role in the court’s recent affirmative action ruling.
“Anybody who’s watched the movie Django, just watch Stephen and you see Clarence Thomas,” Ellison stated in an interview with the Michigan Chronicle.

Ellison further criticized Thomas, accusing him of prioritizing personal interests and aligning with powerful special interests, regardless of the harm caused to others. He went on to call the justice ”illegitimate” and called for his impeachment.
In Django Unchained, Stephen is portrayed as a sadistic house slave who remains fiercely loyal to his master, Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Stephen despises the film’s protagonist, Django, played by Jamie Foxx.
Ellison’s strong words continued, asserting that Thomas lacks legitimacy in his position and should not hold the power he currently possesses. He emphasized that this serves as a lesson for African Americans, highlighting the importance of one’s mindset rather than external appearances.
“Clarence Thomas is illegitimate and has no basis in the job that he’s in,” Ellison declared. “It’s a lesson to us as African Americans. What is the lesson? We all thought, well, he’s a black man raised in the Deep South. He knows what racism and segregation is, he knows what affirmative action is. He’s going to come around one day.”
Ellison concluded by emphasizing that true understanding and progress go beyond superficial factors such as skin color, emphasizing the significance of one’s thoughts and beliefs.
