American children found in northern Mexico.
Four U.S.-born Children Found Safe in Mexico
Great news! The four U.S.-born children who were reported missing in the Mexican state of Chihuahua have been located.
The Chihuahua state authorities have confirmed that the children are safe and with their father, who has custody of them. This update comes from a recent report by /news/border-report/4-american-children-reported-missing-in-mexico/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>KRQE News.
The children, aged 9 to 12, were reported missing after leaving a house in the town of Meoqui, located about 46 miles southeast of Chihuahua City and approximately 283 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
The siblings, Ismael Gómez Herrara Luis Mendoza (12), Isaac Gómez Herrara Mendoza (12), Madahi Gómez Herrara Luis Mendoza (12), and Elías Gómez Herrara Luis Mendoza (9), were born in South Dakota.
The Chihuahua Attorney General’s office had initially shared images and descriptions of the missing children on Facebook, but those posts have since been removed.
In a separate incident, another child went missing from the same town a day earlier.
Jacqueline Pando Flores (14) was reported missing after not returning home from CBTA 147 school. Fortunately, she was found safe with her father, who allegedly took her in what seemed to be a custody dispute, as reported by WGHP-TV.
Missing in Mexico
Kidnappings and disappearances continue to be a significant issue in Mexico. Shockingly, only 1 percent of the over 100,000 missing people have been found, according to the Dallas Express.
Last month, the search for seven kidnapped boys aged 14 to 18 in the state of Zacatecas ended tragically when six bodies and one survivor were discovered in a remote area.
The survivor, an 18-year-old, was found with severe head injuries, according to state prosecutors.
Earlier this year, two American siblings went missing near the northern border state of Nuevo Leon, as reported by Reuters.
In August, five young men were kidnapped in the neighboring state of Jalisco.
A horrifying video circulated on social media, capturing the final moments of the abducted youths. The footage showed two lifeless bodies in the foreground, while another victim was apparently being decapitated by one of the kidnapped friends.
In the past, gangs have been known to force kidnapped victims to turn against each other.
In March, two children aged 16 and 9 disappeared after leaving their home. Thankfully, they were found safe following an Amber alert.
Earlier that same month, four Americans were kidnapped by armed men in Tamaulipas, Mexico, resulting in the deaths of two of them. The victims had crossed the Texas border into Mexico for cosmetic surgery.
A week later, authorities arrested five suspects in connection with the crimes. Tamaulipas Attorney General Irving Barrios Mojica shared this information on X (formerly known as Twitter). Another individual involved in the kidnappings and murders was also apprehended.
Warning to American Travelers
It’s crucial for American travelers to be aware of the risks when visiting Mexico. The U.S. government has issued travel alerts and advisories twice this year, in March and August.
The March alert emphasized that “crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere in Mexico, including popular tourist destinations.”
The later advisory warned that ”violent crime — such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery — is widespread and common in Mexico.”
The August advisory specifically advised against traveling to six states, including Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, and Zacatecas, due to high levels of crime and kidnappings.
It also recommended reconsidering travel to several other states and exercising increased caution in those areas.
