Mitch McConnell addresses retirement query in first press conference since freezing incident.
Mitch McConnell: No Plans to Step Down
The Senate minority leader, Mitch McConnell, made it clear at a news conference on Wednesday that he has no intention of leaving his position before January 2027, when his term officially ends.
When asked about his potential retirement, the 81-year-old McConnell responded, “I have no announcements to make on that subject. I’m going to finish my term as leader and I’m going to finish my Senate term.”

This news conference comes after two incidents in which McConnell appeared to freeze up in public, causing concern. However, according to The Washington Times, McConnell has been cleared to work by Dr. Brian Monahan, the Capitol’s attending physician. Dr. Monahan’s report stated that McConnell did not suffer from a stroke, seizure, or movement disorder.
When asked about the report, McConnell stated, “I think Dr. Monahan covered the subject fully. I don’t have anything to add to it.”
McConnell has been the top-ranking Republican senator since 2007, making him the longest-serving leader in the history of the Senate. Despite recent health concerns, calls for his resignation have been met with resistance.
One of those speculating about McConnell’s freezing incidents is Senator Rand Paul, who is also a physician. Paul pushed back against Dr. Monahan’s claim that McConnell had suffered from dehydration, stating, “I think it’s an inadequate explanation to say this is dehydration. It looks like a focal neurologic event. That doesn’t mean it’s incapacitating. It doesn’t mean he can’t serve. But it means that somebody ought to wake up and say, ‘Wow! This looks like a seizure.'”
