Mitt Romney cautioned Mitch McConnell about threats to his home before Jan. 6.
Sen. Mitt Romney Warned Sen. Mitch McConnell of Potential Violence and Chaos Before Capitol Riot
According to an upcoming book, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) issued a warning to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) about the possibility of violence and chaos similar to what occurred on January 6, 2021. This revelation comes from the first excerpt of McKay Coppins’s new book, “Romney: A Reckoning,” which coincided with Romney’s announcement of his retirement plans.
Threats of Violence
Romney reportedly texted McConnell, sharing that he had received a warning from Sen. Angus King (I-ME) regarding disturbing social media activity related to planned protests on January 6th. The message conveyed alarming calls to burn down McConnell’s home, smuggle guns into DC, and storm the Capitol.
Romney expressed his hope that adequate security measures were in place but expressed concern that the instigator of the potential violence, President Donald Trump, had the power to command reinforcements for the DC and Capitol police.
Unfortunately, McConnell did not respond to the warning, as stated in the excerpt.
The Capitol Riot and its Consequences
Although Sen. McConnell’s house was not targeted, the Capitol riot resulted in $2.7 million in damages and the assault of 140 police officers, according to the Department of Justice.
Former President Donald Trump has since faced federal investigation and indictment for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. He was also impeached for “incitement of insurrection” during his final days in office.
Charges and Sentences
Over 1,100 Capitol protesters have been charged, with several riot leaders facing lengthy prison sentences. Notably, Proud Boys leaders Enrique Tarrio and Joe Biggs received sentences of 22 years and 17 years, respectively.
