Mixed reactions from Michigan politicians on Inauguration Day

(The Center Square) – As President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office on Monday, Michigan politicians from both sides of the aisle have struck different tones.

“Welcome back, President Trump,” said Rep. Lisa McClain, R-MI. She also serves as the U.S. House Republican Conference Chairwoman. “A new day in America has arrived.”

McClain added that Republicans in the U.S. House stand ready to “deliver on the mandate and put America first again.”

On the other hand, Democrat U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar said in a statement on the inauguration he is prepared to fight “extremism.”

“Know that I am going to stand up for Michiganders and our values each and every day,” Thanedar said. “Together, we will fight extremism and protect our rights. That’s my commitment to you.”

Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State and a Democrat, echoed a similar sentiment one day before Inauguration Day.

“I pledge to be a leader who seeks not to divide, but to unify,” Benson said. “Who will tell you the truth over lies. Who will work with anyone to get the job done. And who will spread hope and not fear.”

State Republicans have said they are ready to work with Trump’s Administration. Michigan state Representative Matt Hall, R-Richland Twp. and speaker of the Michigan House, visited Washington D.C. for the inauguration.

“We’ll partner with the Trump administration to make MI strong, safe and healthy again,” Hall said.
