Renowned Former Red Sox Pitcher Bill “Spaceman” Lee Collapses on Field Before He Was Supposed to Throw Out First Pitch
Excitement turned to concern at Polar Park as baseball legend Bill “Spaceman” Lee collapsed just moments before he was set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The 76-year-old former Red Sox pitcher was attending a “Throwback Thursday” Triple-A game between the Worcester Red Sox and the Norfolk Tides in Worcester, Massachusetts.
During a warm-up game of catch, Lee suddenly placed his hands on his knees and toppled backward, leaving everyone in shock. Medical personnel quickly rushed to his aid, and after receiving treatment, Lee managed to walk to the dugout unassisted. Despite the scare, he appeared to be in good spirits, laughing and enjoying the game.
However, as a precautionary measure, Lee was taken to the hospital for further evaluation after about an inning. The Worcester Red Sox shared a heartwarming photo on social media, showing Lee in a hospital bed with a wide smile and giving a thumbs-up to the camera, reassuring fans that he was in stable condition.
We’re thankful to see this big smile from Bill Lee, who is in stable condition at UMass Memorial after experiencing a brief health scare earlier this evening. All of us in WooSox Nation are thinking of you, Spaceman! pic.twitter.com/a8bsAkzmz0

This incident is not the first time Lee has faced a medical scare. About a year ago, while pitching for the Savannah Bananas, he experienced a more serious incident in Georgia. Lee had a “cardiac episode” and stopped breathing, requiring immediate resuscitation with a defibrillator.
Known for his colorful attitude and fiery behavior both on and off the field, Lee has always been an intriguing figure in the world of baseball. Mashable once referred to him as “Hunter S. Thompson on a baseball diamond, more or less.” His major league career came to an abrupt end due to a walkout he staged to protest his team cutting a friend. Despite the challenges, Lee’s legacy continues to thrive, with a film and a song dedicated to him, along with an unsuccessful run for governor of Vermont.
While the incident at Polar Park was a cause for concern, fans can take solace in the fact that Bill “Spaceman” Lee is in stable condition. His resilience and spirit are a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of baseball.
