The Fight for Parental Rights: Moms for Liberty Takes on the SPLC
The founders of Moms for Liberty, a powerful parental rights group, are gearing up for a legal battle against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) after being unjustly labeled as an extremist organization.
Moms for Liberty emerged in 2021 as a response to the detrimental effects of COVID-19 restrictions on education. With students suffering from mental health issues and plummeting test scores, concerned mothers Tina Descovich and Tiffany Justice, along with co-founder Bridget Ziegler, established the group to combat harmful policies and reinforce parental authority over their children’s education. Since then, Moms for Liberty has grown exponentially, with hundreds of chapters across the United States.
In 2022, the SPLC included Moms for Liberty in its annual Year in Hate and Extremism report, branding the group as “far-right antigovernment parents” who intimidate and harass educators. The SPLC accused Moms for Liberty of being a prominent force in the anti-student inclusion movement, opposing the availability and teaching of explicit and Critical Race Theory materials in schools.
Tiffany Justice, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, vehemently denies these allegations and plans to take legal action against the SPLC for defamation. She asserts that the false designation is not only damaging to their chapters nationwide but also intentionally misleading.
“We’re not threatening to do it, we’re going to do it if we feel that we have an ability to do that,” Justice stated. “Defamation is a hard claim in court, but it is certainly affecting our chapters and hurting our chapters all over the country, and intentionally so is the point. And it’s totally unfounded.”
The SPLC’s classification places Moms for Liberty alongside extremist groups such as neo-Nazis and white supremacists, as well as conservative Christian organizations like the Family Research Council. Critics argue that the SPLC often conflates mainstream conservatives and activists with racists and bigots.
“The designation is being used widely by the media. There are people, liberal activists, that are using it to try to hurt our chapters, to try to hurt our moms,” Justice continued. “The SPLC has put a target on the back of every American mom and dad. Shame on them.”
Moms for Liberty is already witnessing the negative impact of the SPLC’s designation on their outreach efforts. Events have been canceled, and the group’s reputation has been tarnished. Justice insists that the SPLC must be held accountable for their actions.
Furthermore, Justice suspects that Moms for Liberty is facing pressure from the federal government. She has filed Freedom of Information Act requests with the Department of Justice and the White House to uncover any potential misuse of the SPLC listing.
“We want to know, how is this list being used? How is the federal government using this list? Are they using it?” Justice questioned. “What are they discussing? What are they talking about?”
Moms for Liberty refuses to be silenced or shamed in their fight for parental rights. They are determined to gather the necessary information to hold the SPLC accountable and protect the future of their children and the country.
