Tragic Alaska Landslide: Parents and 2 Children Dead, 1 Child Missing
Tragedy Strikes: Monstrous Alaska Landslide Claims Lives of Family Members
It’s a heartbreaking reminder that even amidst the breathtaking beauty of God’s creation, there can be unimaginable danger lurking. According to Fox Weather, a devastating landslide near Wrangell, Alaska on Nov. 20 has resulted in four confirmed deaths and two people still missing.
The victims were identified as five members of a family and their neighbor, as reported by The Associated Press. Among them was Otto Florschutz, a 65-year-old commercial fisherman who had previously made a bid for the state’s congressional seat in 2022.
The tragic loss also includes Timothy Heller, 40, and Beth Heller, 36, along with their children. The Hellers were the owners of Heller High Water, a construction company. Beth Heller had also served on the Wrangell School Board in 2019 and 2020.
Tragically, the body of 11-year-old Kara Heller was recovered from the debris on Saturday. The parents, along with their other daughter, 16-year-old Mara Heller, had already been confirmed dead, buried under the wreckage that engulfed houses and parts of a highway.
The Alaska Department of Public Safety stated, “A Scent Detection K-9 indicated on an area of the debris and with the assistance of an excavator, the remains were recovered.” The search efforts will continue if new information or evidence leads to a specific area.

As the search continues, Otto Florschutz and 12-year-old Derek Heller remain missing.
The Alaska Department of Public Safety is working diligently with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to clear the debris from the roadway. They are prepared to resume the search with the assistance of a scent detection K9 team if new information becomes available.
Fortunately, Florschutz’s wife survived the landslide. Otto Florschutz, a Republican who had previously served on Wrangell’s Port Commission, was one of the candidates vying for the congressional seat left vacant by the passing of longtime US Rep. Don Young.
Our hearts go out to both the Florschutz and Heller families during this devastating time.
