Montana Governor Gianforte wants to ban TikTok due to spying on Americans.
Montana Governor Bans TikTok App Over National Security Concerns
Gianforte Takes a Stand Against Chinese Communist Regime
Montana Governor Greg Gianforte has signed legislation banning China’s TikTok app, citing concerns that the communist regime uses it to steal the data of American citizens for “nefarious purposes.” In an interview with Fox News, Gianforte expressed his satisfaction with the ban, stating that the Chinese government’s ability to use TikTok to spy on Americans is well-documented.
ACLU Criticized for Opposing the Ban
Gianforte also criticized the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) for opposing the ban, stating that the Montana Constitution has a broad protection for individual privacy, which TikTok violates. He welcomed the ACLU’s attempts to challenge the ban in court, confident that his administration has already considered all possible outcomes and will emerge victorious.
Broader Ban Needed
While Gianforte is pleased with the ban, he wishes it was broader, including other social media apps owned by foreign adversaries, such as Russian and other Chinese apps. However, he believes that the ban is a good step in the right direction and hopes that other states will follow Montana’s lead.
National Security Issue
Gianforte emphasized that the issue with TikTok and other apps owned by foreign adversaries is not what the app does, but where the personal data goes. He believes that this is a national security issue and a violation of the Montana privacy clause in their Constitution. Montana is the first state in the country to outright ban the TikTok app.
