Montana’s VA experiences leadership changes after investigation.

New Leadership Announced for Montana’s VA Health ⁣Care System

The Department of Veterans‍ Affairs has made an⁤ exciting announcement‍ regarding the⁣ leadership of Montana’s VA ⁢Health Care System. Effective Monday, Duane Gill will take over as the new head, replacing Director Dr. Judy Hayman.

Under ⁣Dr. Hayman’s leadership, concerns about patient safety were self-reported to the ‌Inspector General in 2021. These concerns were later substantiated by the OIG. ⁤Unfortunately, ⁢one patient at the Miles City ⁤Center lost their life due to mistreatment, leading‍ to a pause in all ‍care ⁤at the center from April⁤ to September 2022. As a result, the entire staff involved was terminated.

The Fort Harrison ‍Center has also faced allegations of abuse, waste, and mismanagement, as reported by the OIG. Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) received complaints⁤ about ‌the center and brought them to the‌ attention of⁤ VA Office‍ of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs Secretary Denis R. McDonough. Last week, a report issued by the secretary highlighted “significant issues ‍with the hiring practices and medical malpractice at⁢ Fort Harrison,” ‌according to the congressman.

“I am⁢ pleased by the VA’s decision to require a comprehensive review of the Montana VA Health ⁤Care System ‌and the change in leadership,” Rosendale stated. “I‌ am hopeful this will result in better practices that‌ will properly serve our⁣ veterans. The ⁣core function of the VA is to care ‍for our nation’s heroes,‍ and I appreciate Secretary McDonough and Under Secretary Elnahal for working with ⁣me to address this critical issue for ‌our veterans.”

Montana’s VA Health Care System consists of ⁢multiple medical centers located‌ in⁣ Fort Harrison (Helena), Billings, ‍Browning, Cut Bank, Missoula, Miles City,⁤ Bozeman,‌ Great ⁣Falls, Glasgow, Glendive, Havre, Butte (two centers), ⁢Hamilton, Lewistown, Plentywood,⁤ and ⁣Kalispell. It’s ⁤worth ⁤noting that Montana ranks fourth nationwide for the highest veterans per‌ capita population.
