Kentucky Derby’s Home Makes Big Announcement Months After Racing Suspension
Churchill Downs Implements Safety Measures for September Meet
Churchill Downs, the historic track known for hosting the Kentucky Derby, is taking significant steps to ensure the safety of its horses during its upcoming September meet. Following the unfortunate deaths of 12 horses before and after the Kentucky Derby, the track has implemented new track surface maintenance equipment and additional monitoring and equine care.
The track had suspended its spring meet after the spate of horse deaths, conducting an internal safety review. Now, with racing scheduled to resume on September 14 and run through October 1, Churchill Downs is determined to prioritize the well-being of its horses.
The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority recommended the suspension of the meet, which was then moved to Ellis Park in western Kentucky. However, training continued at Churchill Downs during the investigation. Industry experts found no issues with the racing surfaces, but the track still invested in new maintenance equipment and increased the frequency of surface testing.
Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen emphasized the track’s commitment to safety, stating, “our participants, fans, and the public can be assured that we will continue to investigate, evaluate, and improve upon every policy and protocol.”
In addition to these measures, Churchill Downs veterinarians will receive additional resources for specialized horse care and to assist in pre-race inspections and entry screening. The track will also collaborate with the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority and industry experts to identify at-risk horses through advanced analytic techniques.
To ensure ongoing safety, a safety management committee consisting of horsemen, track employees, and veterinarians will be established.
