Increased number of illegal immigrants apprehended at US-Canadian border in 2023 surpasses previous decade, says Chief Patrol Agent.
Illegal Immigration Surges at US-Canadian Border: Chief Patrol Agent
Illegal immigrants aren’t just infiltrating the United States through the southern border. Chief Patrol Agent Robert Garcia of the United States Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector reveals a startling trend – his agents have apprehended over 6,100 individuals in the past 11 months alone.
This number of apprehensions in the Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire border sector surpasses the combined total of the past 10 years.
Garcia even shared photos of migrant groups traveling through the border region at night, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Garcia’s concern is evident as he issued a memorandum to his superiors in February, urgently requesting additional agents for his sector, according to the New York Post.
Interestingly, Garcia describes a phenomenon where mostly Mexican nationals are entering the United States through Canada, highlighting the need for increased border security measures.
In response to the overwhelming situation, Border Patrol has resorted to asking for volunteers to report to the swarmed sector, after previously seeking volunteers for the southern border.

One possible reason for the surge in crossings is the perception that it is easier to obtain asylum after crossing the northern border.

Earlier this year, the United States and Canada reached a deal to turn away asylum seekers at their respective borders, as reported by NPR.
Canada sought stricter rules due to an increasing number of migrants arriving from the U.S. in Quebec via New York’s Roxham Road.
Many migrants attempt to claim U.S. asylum after flying to Canada and crossing the border.
New York Democratic Rep. Brian Higgins expressed his concerns in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, accusing them of neglecting the northern border.
Higgins objected to the policy of shifting personnel from the northern border to the southern border, claiming it depleted resources in the former.
Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the United States has witnessed record-setting levels of illegal immigration, as reported by Axios.
