More Police Officers Relieved Of Duty Over Death Of Tyre Nichols, EMTs Fired

Following the death of Tyre Nicks, two additional officers of Memphis Police Department have been relieved from duty.

Nichols passed away on January 10, just three days after Memphis police pulled Nichols over during a traffic stop. Nichols and five other former officers of police charged with his murder are both black. Nichols was arrested by police on January 7. “reckless driving” Near Raines Road in Memphis and Ross Road.

Police claimed that during the stop, a “confrontation occurred,” At that point, Nichols fled police on foot while they tried to apprehend.

Surveillance Footage The incident was allegedly shown by five police officers who beat Nichols after they caught up to him. They then placed him in handcuffs.

The number of officers who have been disciplined is now seven, after the Memphis police officers were relieved of their duties.

Two counts of official misconduct have been filed against officers Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley and Emmit Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith, according to local media reports. One count each of official oppression and second-degree murder, aggravated attack-act in concert and two counts each of aggravated kidnapping.

The Associated Press reported that the Memphis Fire Department officials announced on Monday that they had fired three emergency medical technicians that responded to the scene.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation into two of its deputies after the body camera footage was released on Friday evening.

“Having watched the videotape for the first time tonight, I have concerns about two deputies who appeared on the scene following the physical confrontation between police and Tyre Nichols,” Floyd Bonner, Jr. Shelby County Sheriff . “I have launched an internal investigation into the conduct of these deputies to determine what occurred and if any policies were violated. Both of these deputies have been relieved of duty pending the outcome of this administrative investigation.”

Steve Mulroy, Shelby County District Attorney, said Monday that any person involved in the events leading to, during and after the beating Nichols could face additional criminal charges.

“This includes the officer present at the initial encounter who has not — so far — been charged, Memphis Fire Department personnel, and persons who participated in preparing documentation of the incident afterward,” the district attorney’s office .
