More than $50,000 has been raised for Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, in an online fundraiser.
Since the shooting on Dec. 4, money has flooded into the GiveSendGo fund created by the December 4th Legal Committee. The money is for Mangione’s legal fees, and a quarter of the $200,000 goal has been met, with $51,401 collected as of Thursday.
“This is a preemptive legal fundraiser for the suspect allegedly involved in the shooting of the United Healthcare CEO. We are not here to celebrate violence, but we do believe in the constitutional right of fair legal representation,” the December 4th Legal Committee wrote on GiveSendGo.
Mangione was declared a suspect in Thompson’s murder and arrested Monday, prompting thousands of people to donate and send messages of support and celebration. Many commenters expressed dissent with the U.S. healthcare system and stood with Mangione in solidarity.
One anonymous giver donated $31 and commented, “In light of United Healthcare having record profits in 2024, and use of AI to deny claims for subscribers, these people in this organization are scum. Luigi’s acts should shed light on the need for the USA to end profit-motive in healthcare. Citizens need free, universal healthcare.”
Under a donation of $500, one anonymous giver wrote, “I hope this entire event leads to the a rethinking of the wealthy people running this country. Health insurance has been a scam for far to long and it needs to change! Stop talking about it and do something.”
Another donation of $43 was made with nothing but “Way to go kid!” attached. Other comments have included “Deny, defend, depose,” which was reportedly inscribed on the bullet casings found at the crime scene.
The top donation thus far, $1,300, was donated Tuesday with the comment, “Coincidentally the same amount I was charged for my 100% covered medical procedure.”
Mangione’s support has extended past his donation fund, too. Merchandise with slogans such as “CEO Hunter” is being sold, and “Wanted” posters featuring the names and faces of various CEOs have been seen throughout New York City.
Mangione is currently being held in Pennsylvania, where he is contesting extradition to New York. His lawyer has said Mangione plans to plead not guilty to Pennsylvania’s gun and forgery charges.
