More Than A Dozen Michigan School Districts Cancel Classes Over Threats Of Further Violence
Several school districts in the Detroit area have canceled classes on Thursday amid threats of further violence after a school shooting terrorized a nearby community.
At least 13 school districts in the Detroit area will be closed Thursday, with many closed Friday as well. The school districts include: Bloomfield Hills Schools, Holly Area Schools, Troy Schools, Rochester Community Schools, Brandon School District, Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, Lake Orion Community Schools, Clawson Public Schools, Warren Consolidated Schools, Hazel Park Schools, Avondale School District, West Bloomfield School District and Lamphere Schools, NBC News reported.
In a statement posted on the Bloomfield Hills Schools website at 11 P.M. Wednesday night, Superintendent Pat Watson said all schools in the district would be closed “out of an abundance of caution” after receiving several threats of violence on social media:
“Over the past hour, BHS and other communities across the region have received numerous reports of threats of violence circulating on social media. Out of an abundance of caution, all BHS schools will be closed on Thursday, December 2, 2021. All after school activities are also cancelled.”
“The safety and security of our students is our top priority. We are in constant contact with Bloomfield Township Police who take every report or rumor seriously. We will follow up with you tomorrow with any updated information.”
Holly Area Schools Superintendent Scott Roper issued a letter to parents Wednesday afternoon co-signed by Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh announcing the schools’ closure for the remainder of the week:
At the end of the school day today, district administration received multiple reports of a potential shooting threat against Holly Area schools that had been posted on social media. In response, Holly Area Schools began a joint investigation with the Holly Police Department.
The police department has interviewed a number of students who have shared these posts. The investigation has produced no source for the original threat, but instead several second and third-hand reports from individuals sharing what they heard others say.
At this point our police department has deemed the threat not credible due to a lack of evidence. But given the extraordinary circumstances, we would like to take the next two days to ask our community to please share any information regarding any threats with school administration or the Holly police department at (248) 858-4911.
The districts that announced closure are joined by the Oxford school district, which will be closed for the rest of the week.
Four people were killed and seven others were injured in a school shooting at Oxford High School, about 45 miles north of Detroit, on Tuesday. Police arrested the suspect, an Oxford student, and seized a 9mm Sig Sauer SP 2022 with at least two 15-round magazines with 7 rounds remaining. Police found at least 12 shell casings at the scene. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said that it is likely the gun had been purchased by the suspect’s father on Black Friday, and that the suspect had been shooting it and posted pictures. The suspect is in custody, facing murder and terrorism charges.
The student is being charged as an adult and his name was released; however, The Daily Wire will not share his name pursuant to our policy against naming the perpetrators in mass casualty incidents.
