Poll: Majority of Missourians against transgender care for minors as court battle commences over ban.
A Majority of Missouri Voters Oppose Gender Transition Medical Care for Transgender Youth
A court battle is currently taking place in Missouri regarding the ban on gender transition medical care for transgender youth. Families of transgender minors and LGBT organizations are suing to block the state’s ban, but recent polling data reveals that a majority of Missouri voters do not support such medical care.
Strong Opposition to Surgeries and Hormone Therapy
According to the latest St. Louis University/YouGov poll, 73% of probable voters in Missouri oppose transgender surgeries for minors. Additionally, 63% are against hormone therapy or medication that blocks the effects of puberty. These responses from hundreds of Missourians clearly demonstrate their disapproval of these medical interventions.
Republican Support for the Ban
It is worth noting that almost all Missouri Republicans are in favor of banning procedures and treatments for transgender youth. A staggering 90% of Republican voters believe that these options should not be available to minors.
“Missourians indisputably favor restricting gender transition medical care for minors,” said Steve Rogers, the poll’s director and a political scientist at SLU. “But they do not completely oppose gender-affirming care for minors. Forty-four percent of voters favored, and 44% of voters opposed minors being able to receive gender-affirming counseling.”
Missouri’s Ban on Transgender Medical Care
Missouri is one of approximately two dozen states that have passed a ban on transgender medical care for children and teenagers. The state’s Republican-led legislature passed a bill making it illegal for healthcare providers to perform gender transition surgeries and prescribe hormone treatments for minors. Governor Mike Parson signed the ban into law in early June.
The law, known as the “Missouri Save Adolescents from Experimentation Act,” is scheduled to go into effect on August 28. However, the ACLU of Missouri, along with other advocacy groups and three families of transgender children, filed a lawsuit against the state to prevent the ban from taking effect.
Republican Attorney General’s Defense
Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey has staunchly defended the bill. Bailey is a strong advocate for barring transgender medical care for both minors and adults. In April, he attempted to extend transgender restrictions to adults using the state’s emergency rule, but a judge blocked the move a few weeks later.
A court battle is currently underway to determine whether the Missouri law is discriminatory against transgender children. A county judge is expected to make a ruling before Monday.
