A recent Quinnipiac poll indicates that a majority of New York City voters believe Mayor Eric adams should resign, as he faces a challenging political landscape including a significant lead for former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming Democratic primary. The survey reveals that 56% of voters favor Adams stepping down, while only 35% oppose this view. Furthermore, Adams’s approval rating has plummeted to 20%, marking the lowest for any New York City mayor in nearly 30 years, with a disapproval rate of 67%. The poll shows Cuomo with 31% support among voters, compared to Adams’s 11%, with many still undecided. The Democratic primary, scheduled for June 24, represents a key moment for both candidates, with potential implications for the general election in November.
Most New York City voters want Adams to resign as Cuomo takes commanding primary lead: Poll
New York City Mayor Eric Adams thinks he should lead the city for another term, but voters are not as keen on him.
In a Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday, Adams trailed former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo significantly in Democratic primary support, and most voters think he should resign from his position as mayor. The survey comes as a judge weighs whether to toss out federal corruption charges against Adams after the Trump Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss them.
The poll shows that 56% of voters believe Adams should resign, while 35% say he should not. Adams also holds a disapproval rating of 67%, with only 20% of voters saying they approve of his job as mayor. The pollster said Adams’s approval rating was the lowest of any New York City mayor since it began polling city voters roughly three decades ago.
“Unpopular even before an indictment on federal corruption charges, voters’ confidence in Mayor Adams sinks to a new low now that his legal case has become a national controversy,” Quinnipiac University Poll Assistant Director Mary Snow said in a statement on the findings.
For the Democratic primary for mayor, the pollster found that 31% supported Cuomo compared to 11% who supported Adams. Of the other nine candidates listed, no other candidate reached double-digit support, and 16% said they were undecided.
HOUSE DEMOCRAT CALLS FOR ERIC ADAMS TO STEP DOWN AS NYC MAYOR AT HEARING
The June 24 primary will be an attempted political comeback for Cuomo, as Adams aims to hold his seat despite his current unpopularity. Cuomo resigned as governor of the Empire State in disgrace in 2021 after various sexual harassment allegations were made against him. He also faced continuing fallout over his handling of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic at the time of his resignation.
The winner of the June Democratic primary will likely win the general election in November due to the city’s overwhelming affiliation with the Democratic Party.
