President Donald Trump recognized 13-year-old cancer survivor DJ Daniel in a touching moment at the joint address to Congress on Tuesday. After recognizing him, the president gave him a night he would soon not forget, helping Daniel achieve a lifelong dream to serve and protect others.

Daniel is a brain cancer survivor who wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. Yet, because of his medical condition, it was uncertain if Daniel, 13, would ever be able to do so. As the Washington Examiner previously reported, when Daniel was initially diagnosed with cancer, he was only given five months to live. However, six years later, he has survived 13 brain surgeries and was one of Trump’s guests for his speech Tuesday night.

“He has always dreamed of becoming a police officer,” Trump said during his speech. “But in 2018, DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago. Since then, DJ and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true.”

Trump named Daniel an honorary member of the Secret Service in a moment that many thought was heartwarming. However, talk show hosts at MSNBC, including Rachel Maddow and Nicole Wallace, were heavily critical of the exchange. Maddow characterized it as “disgusting” while commenting alongside a panel on MSNBC’s coverage of the speech.

“For the record – and this is disgusting – the president made a spectacle out of praising a young man who’s thus far survived pediatric cancer – as if the president had something to do with that,” Rachel Maddow said on the network on Tuesday night.

Maddow’s colleague, Nicole Wallace, was also critical of Trump recognizing the pediatric cancer survivor. She tried to link the moment to the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., from 2021.

“I hope he’s alive for another 95 years,” Wallace began. “And I hope he lives the life he wants to live. He wants to be a cop. He knows what he wants to do. And maybe when you have childhood cancer, that crystalizes for you. And I hope he has a long life as a law enforcement officer.”

TRUMP TAKES FIGHT TO JEERING DEMOCRATS IN SPEECH FULL OF RED MEAT

“But I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump supporters,” Wallace inexplicably added, linking two events that were not related in any way. “And if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide. And I hope he isn’t one that has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people.”

The sour attitude of the MSNBC commentators seemed to match that of the Democrats who attended Trump’s speech. After Trump publicly recognized the 13-year-old cancer survivor, video showed many Democrats not standing or applauding for Daniel, a sharp contrast to the Republicans in attendance who gave Daniel a welcomed reception and thunderous applause.
