MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell, ‘exhausted’ by Trump’s return, announces on-air hiatus

MSNBC‘s Lawrence O’Donnell said he is already tired from covering the Trump administration and will be taking a weeklong break to recover properly.

The host of The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell made the announcement during an appearance at the end of The Rachel Maddow Show on Wednesday night. O’Donnell acknowledged that Maddow “pledged” to cover Trump’s first 100 days and hoped that she did not notice he did not make the same pledge.

“Well, here’s the thing: this is day 52. I thought it was day 92. It turns out it’s day 52, Rachel, and I’m exhausted at day 52, so I’m going to take next week off,” O’Donnell said. “And I’m telling you that now, ’cause I know you don’t like it when I just drift away and I don’t — just taking next week off, then I come back and go with you all the way to the hundred days.”

Maddow said the crew told one another, “You have to take care of yourself,” but that she was “very sad” by his announcement. O’Donnell then added that he was getting “a head start” by taking Thursday off.

When Maddow asked if she could join O’Donnell on his break, O’Donnell said no and pointed out how she promised to cover Trump‘s first 100 days. However, he said on Trump’s 101st day back in office, the two would take time off. He then closed out his intro by wishing Maddow a “happy day 52.”

DEMOCRATS NEED TO KICK THEIR DOOMCASTING ADDICTION

O’Donnell’s decision to take a weeklong break came as MSNBC underwent multiple shake-ups, the biggest one arguably being the network firing Joy Reid and ending her show The ReidOut. Trump celebrated MSNBC’s cancelation of the show on Truth Social and suggested it should have been canceled “long ago.”

Last week, Maddow and fellow MSNBC host Nicole Wallace drew the ire of Trump when they criticized Trump’s address to Congress, during which he honored 13-year-old pediatric cancer survivor D.J. Daniel. Maddow deemed it “disgusting,” which led Trump to suggest the anchors should be “forced to resign,” as they “lost all credibility.”
