MTG plans to reintroduce Tlaib censure resolution after initial failure.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to Revamp Resolution Against Rep. Rashida Tlaib
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is determined to reintroduce her resolution to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) after it was unsuccessful earlier this week. However, she plans to make some changes to the wording in order to gain more support.
The Original Accusations
The original resolution accused Tlaib of engaging in “antisemitic activity” and “leading an insurrection” at the United States Capitol. This referred to a demonstration where pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside members’ offices to demand a ceasefire in Gaza. The U.S. Capitol Police reported that over 100 protesters were arrested, with a few facing charges of assaulting police officers.
However, the use of the word “insurrection” in the resolution sparked controversy among many members, leading to 23 Republicans voting to table Greene’s resolution on Wednesday.
Now, Greene plans to replace “insurrection” with “illegal occupation” in the hopes of gaining more support for the resolution. She shared this update on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
“Hopefully, the 23 Republicans who voted no to censure Pro-terrorists Pro-Hamas Anti-Israel anti-Semitic Rashida Tlaib will use their freedom of speech in congress to censure (condemn) Terrorist Tlaib’s speech, lies, and actions that incited an illegal occupation on Oct 18th,” Greene said in the post.
A spokesperson for Greene confirmed that she will introduce the resolution as a privileged resolution. This means that House Leadership will have two legislative days to bring it to the floor once she introduces it.
Tlaib has faced increased criticism recently after posting a video on X where she accused President Joe Biden of supporting the genocide of Palestinians.
“Mr. President, the American people are not with you on this one,” Tlaib says in the video. “We will remember in 2024.”
The video then transitions to white lettering that reads: “Joe Biden supported the genocide of the Palestinian people. The American people won’t forget. Biden, support a cease-fire now. Or don’t count on us in 2024.”

How does Rep. Greene plan to reach out to her Democratic colleagues and build a bipartisan coalition in support of the revised resolution?
Rhetoric” and promoting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel. Greene argued that Tlaib’s statements and actions were harmful to the Jewish community and undermined the United States’ relationship with Israel. Despite Greene’s efforts, the resolution did not receive enough support to pass.
Revisions to the Resolution
In an attempt to garner more support, Greene intends to revise the language of the resolution. She plans to focus on Tlaib’s alleged support for the BDS movement and its implications rather than accusing her directly of antisemitism. This adjustment aims to address concerns that the original resolution might have been mischaracterizing Tlaib’s intentions and stifling legitimate criticism of Israeli policies. By targeting the BDS movement specifically, Greene hopes to create a more focused and potentially more persuasive argument.
Furthermore, Greene recognizes that she needs to gain bipartisan support for her resolution to have a chance of passing. She acknowledges that her previous attempts were unsuccessful due to the Democrat majority in the House of Representatives. Therefore, she intends to reach out to Democratic colleagues and find common ground on the issue. By engaging in open dialogue and addressing concerns, she hopes to build a broader coalition that can recognize the negative impact of the BDS movement on U.S.-Israel relations, regardless of party affiliation.
Importance of the Resolution
The resolution against Tlaib holds significance beyond its immediate content. It represents a larger debate surrounding free speech, criticism of Israel’s policies, and the dividing lines within the Democratic Party. Some argue that the resolution could be seen as an attempt to suppress legitimate criticism of Israeli actions and hinder the freedom of speech, while others believe that it is crucial to call out rhetoric and movements that promote anti-Israel sentiments. The resolution sparks discussions surrounding the boundaries of political discourse and the impact such discourse can have on international relations.
Potential Outcomes
While it is uncertain whether the revised resolution will gain enough support to pass, reintroducing it indicates Greene’s commitment to holding Tlaib accountable for her alleged support of the BDS movement if not her antisemitic rhetoric. The resolution has the potential to further polarize the debate within Congress and the public. It could deepen the divide between those who view criticism of the Israeli government as legitimate and those who see it as antisemitic, sparking further discussions on the broader issues at stake.
Conclusion
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s decision to revamp her resolution against Rep. Rashida Tlaib indicates her determination to address what she perceives as Tlaib’s support for the BDS movement. By adjusting the language of the resolution and seeking bipartisan support, Greene aims to increase its chances of success. Regardless of the resolution’s outcome, it represents a broader debate concerning free speech, criticism of Israeli policies, and the dividing lines within the Democratic Party. The renewed focus on Tlaib’s alleged support for the BDS movement will likely fuel discussions surrounding the boundaries of political discourse and its impact on international relations.
