Wealthy Dem Governor Leaves Taxpayers with $12K Bill for Nights Out, Taylor Swift Show
New Jersey Governor Sticks Taxpayers with $12K Tab for Taylor Swift Concert
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, like millions of fans, has enjoyed live performances by Taylor Swift. However, it was the taxpayers who ended up footing the bill for his extravagant night out.
According to Politico, public records reveal that Murphy spent nearly $12,000 on food and drinks at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. This included attending a Taylor Swift concert in 2018 and a hip-hop music festival in 2019.
When questioned about this excessive spending, the governor’s office initially claimed that the Democratic State Committee was responsible for the bill. However, they later refused to cover the costs, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill through Murphy’s expense account.
Unfortunately for Murphy, the state’s budgetary rules clearly state that these expenses should be reserved for official purposes, not personal enjoyment like attending Taylor Swift concerts.
Murphy’s spokeswoman, Jennifer Sciortino, stated that they expected the state committee to cover the expenses, as they traditionally do. However, since the bills remained unpaid, the state had to step in and take responsibility. They are now seeking reimbursement from the state party.
Uncovering the Lavish Spending
Meanwhile, Phil Swibinski, a spokesman for the New Jersey Democratic State Committee, claimed that they had no knowledge of any agreement to pay these invoices. They are currently investigating the matter to determine if further action is necessary.
According to Politico, the expenses at MetLife Stadium included:
- $936 at a Taylor Swift concert in July 2018
- $2,095 at a soccer game between the U.S. Men’s National Team and Brazil in September 2018
- $2,068 at an NFL game between the New York Jets and New England Patriots in November 2018
- $1,413 at Hot 97’s Summer Jam in June 2019, featuring Cardi B and Meek Mill
- $2,856 at a soccer game between the USMNT and Mexico in September 2019
- $2,479 at a Jets game against the Dallas Cowboys in October 2019
Records indicate that taxpayers did not cover any MetLife Stadium expenses after 2019.
A Wealthy Governor’s Questionable Choices
What makes Murphy’s spending spree even more outrageous is the fact that he could easily afford to pay the bill himself. The 66-year-old Democrat, who previously worked for Goldman Sachs and served as Obama’s ambassador to Germany, has a reported net worth exceeding million.
From 2010 to 2014, Murphy made $21 million, and in 2016, he reported a personal income of $4.6 million. Given his considerable fortune, it is baffling why he would burden taxpayers with his extravagant entertainment expenses.

What should be done to establish stricter oversight and accountability for politicians’ expenses in New Jersey
Murphy served as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany under the Obama administration. Then, in 2017, he successfully campaigned for the position of Governor of New Jersey, becoming the state’s 56th governor. With such an impressive financial background, it is clear that Murphy has the means to cover his own expenses.
The revelation of Murphy’s lavish spending raises questions about his judgement and priorities as a public servant. While the governor may argue that attending these events allowed him to engage with constituents and promote the state, it is clear that taxpayers should not be burdened with the cost of his personal enjoyment.
Moreover, given the significant economic challenges faced by many New Jersey residents, it is disheartening to see a wealthy governor exploit the system and push financial responsibility onto the taxpayers. It sends the message that the well-being of taxpayers is not a priority, and that their hard-earned money can be spent frivolously without consequence.
This incident also highlights the need for stricter oversight and accountability for politicians’ expenses. While it is understandable that public officials may incur some expenses to carry out their duties, it is essential to ensure that these expenses are justified and serve a legitimate purpose.
In the case of Murphy’s extravagant nights out, it is clear that the expenses were solely for personal enjoyment and did not contribute to the betterment of the state or its residents. This kind of misuse of public funds undermines trust in the political system and erodes public confidence.
Moving forward, it is crucial for the New Jersey government to establish clear guidelines and protocols regarding politicians’ expenses. These guidelines should ensure that taxpayer funds are used responsibly and exclusively for official purposes that benefit the public.
Additionally, there should be regular audits and reviews to ensure compliance with these guidelines, and penalties should be imposed on individuals who misuse public funds for personal gain. This will not only hold politicians accountable but also act as a deterrent for future misconduct.
Ultimately, the citizens of New Jersey deserve a governor who prioritizes their needs and respects their hard-earned money. It is imperative that leaders in the state take action to address this issue, restore public trust, and ensure that taxpayers are not burdened with the costs of their representatives’ personal indulgences.
