Florida Senator Rick Scott has become the latest victim of a dangerous prank known as swatting.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at Scott’s residence late Wednesday night, only to discover it was a swatting incident within 15 minutes of their arrival.
Swatting is a dangerous prank where individuals make false emergency calls to prompt a SWAT team response at someone’s home.
This incident follows similar swatting incidents involving Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Brandon Williams (R-N.Y.) on Christmas day.
Authorities revealed that a man in New York called a suicide hotline in Georgia, falsely claiming to have shot his girlfriend and planning to harm himself, providing Greene’s address.
Fortunately, police determined the call was a hoax before dispatching to Greene’s residence and contacted her security detail to confirm there was no threat.
The Rome Police Department has reported at least 18 swatting incidents targeting Greene’s home since December 2020.
“If we’ve been called out on a false call we could be depleting the resources from someone who truly needs an emergency response,” said Kelly Madden with the Rome Police Department. “What if that was a baby that’s choking? What if that was a burning car?”
Greene also shared on her X profile (previously known as Twitter) that one of her family members was also swatted.
Representative Williams stated that deputies contacted him before arriving at his residence and left with homemade treats.
All the targeted lawmakers who have fallen victim to swatting are Republicans running for re-election, although it’s unclear if the incidents are connected.
Furthermore, on Tuesday, four current or former GOP state lawmakers in Ohio were also swatted. These individuals include State Representative Kevin Miller (R-Ohio), former Representative Rick Carfagna (R-Ohio), Senator Andrew Brenner (R-Ohio), and Attorney General Dave Yost (R-Ohio).
All of these Ohio lawmakers supported legislation that made swatting a felony in the state, which took effect earlier this year.
Authorities are actively investigating all these incidents and stress the importance of not wasting resources on false calls, as they divert attention from genuine emergencies.
