Multiple New York Democratic Lawmakers Busted For Cocaine In Past Two Years

Something is going on in upstate New York, as multiple Democratic politicians have been busted for cocaine possession in the past two years.

The New York Post reported that three Democratic lawmakers in northern New York have “been busted in the last two years for possession of the drug — and one defiantly remains in office.” The three lawmakers all held office in New York’s 21st congressional district, a large district that “stretches from Saratoga to the Canadian border,” the Post noted.

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who also serves that district, told the Post that “North Country elected Democrats have a cocaine and crime problem.”

Tony Arquiett, a legislator in St. Lawrence County, is refusing to resign even though he was arrested on December 5 for drunk driving and cocaine possession charges after a car crash. His attorney, Ed Narrow, told the Post that Arquiett will plead not guilty and won’t resign.

Rep. Stefanik called his refusal to resign “a disgrace.”

Tim Currier, the former mayor of Massena, New York, was arrested on December 1, 2020, “after allegedly leading local lawmen on a car chase through the village,” the Post reported. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s office also said Currier was seen “throwing approximately one gram of crack cocaine out his passenger window.” Video of the arrest shows Currier was arrested at gunpoint. Currier was charged with drug possession, tampering with evidence and failure to comply with a police officer.

Currier resigned a month after the arrest, saying, “I made some poor decisions … I cannot express how embarrassed and disappointed [I am] in myself and for my family and friends.”

Currier pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of failing to obey a police officer, the Post reported. He was ordered to pay a $150 fine and $93 in court costs.

The third lawmaker, Clinton County legislator Simon Conroy, was arrested in September 2019 for cocaine possession, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest, the Press Republican reported. More from the Post:

Conroy, 47, who also has a stalking charge on his rap sheet for allegedly harassing a female friend, was found with the drugs in an incident near Plattsburgh City Hall, according to reports. Local police would not divulge details of the matter.

“I believe the charge was fraudulent and due to a particularly corrupt law enforcement officer,” he defiantly told his colleagues, WAMC reportedHe resigned weeks after his arrest and in May pleaded guilty to misdemeanor speeding and criminal mischief. He was fined $500 fine and sentenced to 180 days in Clinton County Jail.

Experts told the Post that norther New York has a growing drug problem.

“I run the county jail and I gotta tell you, 60 to 80 percent of the inmates I have, have some sort of a drug issue,” Franklin County Sheriff Kevin Mulverhill told the outlet. “Now that we are getting over the opioid epidemic, cocaine seems to be filling in the gap.”
