Musk, China’s BYD deny report on Tesla ending battery supply cooperation

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk and Chinese electric vehicle and battery maker BYD Co Ltd on Tuesday denied a media report that said the U.S. company was ending cooperation with BYD on battery supplies.

The Korean Economic Daily reported on Sunday that industry sources indicated that Tesla had not asked BYD to supply additional batteries for certain Tesla Model 3 cars after their supply contract expired earlier this year.

“That media report is false. Relations between Tesla and BYD are positive,” Musk tweeted the following Tuesday.

BYD stated in a statement to Reuters that the report was inaccurate. “is not in line with the actual situation.”

In June, Lian Yubo, BYD’s Executive Vice President, stated to Chinese state-owned broadcaster CGTN (Chinese State-owned Broadcaster) that BYD was preparing Tesla with batteries “very soon”. Since then, neither company has publicly disclosed any deals.
