Musk Meets With Lawmakers To Discuss AI: ‘Great Power To Do Good And Evil’
Elon Musk Meets with Congress to Discuss AI Regulation
Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI, recently met with members of Congress to discuss the need for regulating artificial intelligence (AI) as more companies rush to incorporate the technology into their operations. Musk believes that regulations will protect the public from possible harmful effects of the nascent technology. He commented, “AI has great power to do good and evil. Better the former.”
Regulatory Framework for AI
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) recently unveiled a possible regulatory framework for AI. The framework aims to “increase transparency, responsibility, and accountability” for AI systems while “reducing the potential for misuse” or promoting “misinformation and bias.” Musk responded positively to the framework, stating that “AI regulation will be far more important than it may seem today.”
Concerns and Benefits of AI
While concerns about the potential negative effects of AI persist, studies have shown that AI systems drastically improve worker productivity. For example, generative AI helped customer support employees respond to 14% more chats than their colleagues who did not have access to the system. Amazon also found that coders who used AI computer programming tool CodeWhisperer completed tasks 57% faster and were 27% more likely to achieve success than those who did not use the system.
Despite the benefits, Musk and other technology leaders have called for a six-month moratorium on developing AI solutions stronger than GPT-4 as the world considers possible ramifications of the technology. “Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable,” the letter asserted. “This confidence must be well justified and increase with the magnitude of a system’s potential effects.”
As the world grapples with the potential of AI, regulatory frameworks will be necessary to ensure that the technology is used for good and not evil.
