Musk says Twitter will roll out pay-per-article feature as revenue option

Twitter to Allow Media Outlets to Charge Per Article Read

Get ready for a major change on Twitter! CEO Elon Musk announced that starting in May, media outlets will be able to charge per article read on the platform. This means that users who don’t want to sign up for a monthly subscription can pay a higher per article price to read occasional articles. Musk promises that the function will be as simple as a single click, making it a win-win for both media organizations and the public.

Twitter will take a 10% cut on content subscriptions after the first 12 months, according to Musk. This new feature comes after NPR and Canada’s CBC Radio quit Twitter permanently earlier this month in protest of being temporarily labeled as “state-funded media.”

Not Everyone is Happy About It

While this announcement is exciting for some, not everyone in journalism is thrilled about it. Reporter Taylor Lorenz tweeted, “Babe wake up we’re doing micropayments in media for the 87th time,” along with links to opinion pieces opposing micropayments to news outlets. “By 2024 Musk is gonna pivot to video.”

Despite the mixed reactions, this change is sure to shake up the media landscape on Twitter. Stay tuned for more updates!

Also, don’t forget that Time announced it will remove its paywall beginning June 1. Exciting times ahead!
