Musk-tied group buying ads for Wisconsin Supreme Court race

A political group tied to Elon Musk is reportedly buying television advertisements in support of conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel in the upcoming election.

The April Wisconsin Supreme Court election could tip the balance of the court, with liberal Justice Ann Walsh Bradley stepping down from her seat, and the court currently having a narrow liberal majority. The upcoming election will pit Schimel, the former Wisconsin Attorney General, against Dane County Judge Susan Crawford, a liberal.

With the election weeks away, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Building America’s Future, a group backed by Elon Musk, has purchased more than $670,000 in television advertisements supporting Schimel.

The advertisements include $255,000 spent for the Milwaukee television market, $136,000 for the Madison television market, and $104,000 for the Green Bay television market, among other markets.

Musk poured money into the group during the 2024 elections, as part of his efforts to support the candidacy of Donald Trump and other Republicans running for office.

The billionaire SpaceX and Tesla CEO is now in the Trump White House as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency, an agency with the objective to cut waste and fraud in the federal government.

Musk shared his opinion on the importance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court race last month with a post on X.

“Very important to vote Republican for the Wisconsin Supreme Court to prevent voting fraud!” Musk posted, referring to a post about the upcoming election.

The winner of the April 1 election will win a 10 year term, and comes ahead of conservative justices being up for election in 2026 and 2027. The race also comes two years after liberals were able to flip a seat on the court in a costly April 2023 election.
