Muslim Michigan mayor says Trump endorsement followed ‘neglect’ from Harris – Washington Examiner
Hamtramck, Michigan’s Mayor Amer Ghalib has publicly endorsed former President Donald Trump, attributing his decision to what he perceives as “neglect” from the Biden-Harris administration, especially regarding the war in Gaza. As Election Day approaches, with Michigan’s 16 electoral votes at stake, both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are competing for support in the state. Ghalib expressed disappointment in the administration’s failure to address the concerns of the Arab American community, noting that Harris’s inclusion of Liz Cheney as a military adviser reminded many of past grievances tied to the Iraq War. He highlighted a year of advocacy for a more engaged response from the administration but felt it was met with negligence, prompting his endorsement of Trump.
Muslim Michigan mayor says Trump endorsement followed ‘neglect’ from Harris
Hamtramck, Michigan, Mayor Amer Ghalib said “neglect” from the Biden-Harris administration on the issue of the war in Gaza led him to endorse former President Donald Trump.
With only two days left until Election Day, both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are battling to win over Michigan. The state has 16 electoral votes up for grabs and a history of swinging to either party.
“During the whole year of a war in the Middle East, I supported the uncommitted movement in Michigan to send a strong message to the current administration to take our concerns into consideration, but nothing was happening. In fact, they completely neglected us and negligence became the norm and everything else is an exception,” Ghalib said on Fox News’s Sunday Morning Futures with Mario Bartiromo. “[Harris] added insult to the wound by having Liz Cheney be her top military adviser, which brings memories back to the Arab American community about the invasion of Iraq based on false claims of having weapons of mass destruction and hundreds of thousands were killed. So, this is very disappointing to the Arab American community.”
The uncommitted movement encouraged Democratic voters to vote “uncommitted” in Michigan’s primary election as a form of protest against President Joe Biden’s support of Israel. Shortly after the state’s Democratic primary, Biden publicly called for a ceasefire in Gaza, which Ghalib said is his main priority.
Former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, have both endorsed Harris for president. Dick Cheney served as vice president during the war in Iraq.
Ghalib has joined Trump on the campaign trail. He has said the Democratic ticket “should be punished” by losing the Arab American vote.
In Michigan, Arab American voters make up almost 5% of the vote, according to the Arab American Institute. In Ohio, they make up 1.7%, while in Pennsylvania, they make up 2% of likely voters.
