Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota, has signed legislation that forbids transgender medical care in the state and makes it against the law to treat children under the age of 18 in a gender-affirming manner.

According to the new law, a medical professional who performs sex change surgery on an infant does face criminal charges. It goes into effect right away and carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and$ 20,000 in fines.

However, it gives authorities the authority to accuse a doctor of administering gender-affirming medications like puberty blockers to trans children. Up to 360 days in prison and$ 3,000 in fines would be the penalties for such a crime.

Democratic lawmakers overrode their veto and voted in favor of the bill Burgum signed, though a number of Republicans did visit the Democrats in voting against it.

According to a speech from Burgum( R – N. D. ), the constitution is” aimed at protecting children from the life-altering effects of gender reassignment clinics.” He claims, though, that North Dakota doctors have attested to the fact that adolescents have never undergone these surgeries and still do not.

All North Dakota students and their families should be shown compassion and understanding, he said, as thoughtful discussion of these intricate health guidelines moves ahead.

After it was approved with veto-proof majorities in both the House and Senate earlier this month, the Republican already signed a ban on transgender athletes into act. There weren’t enough votes in the House or Senate to reject a solution that Burgum vetoed in 2021 that would have prohibited trans athletes at the time.

The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) had approved puberty blockers 30 years ago in order to treat children with” precocious pubery,” a condition that causes sexual development to begin significantly earlier than usual. For many years, testosterone defects have been treated or used as birth control pills with hormone, which are synthetic versions of estrogen and testosterone.

The medications have been used for many years” off label ,” which is a common and accepted procedure for numerous medical problems, even though the FDA had not officially authorized them to treat young people who are questioning their gender. Doctors who treat trans doctors claim that the medications’ decades of use are proof that they are not experimental.
