Pelosi rejects Jill Biden’s criticisms, citing her ‘mission for the American people’

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) responded to former first lady Jill Biden‘s recent media interview where she claimed Pelosi was “disappointing” her.

Days before the then-first lady left the White House, she offered her takeaways from her husband’s reelection campaign that never was. Her husband had announced he would run again but ultimately bowed out to make way for his Vice President Kamala Harris. Biden recalled Pelosi’s words in the days before her husband dropped out, when she appeared on MSNBC to say “It’s up to the president to decide if he is going to run.”

“The former first lady, Jill Biden, has spoken out saying she was disappointed in you,” Andrea Mitchell asked Pelosi Thursday on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports. “Is there any way to patch that up?”

“Well, I certainly hope so,” Pelosi said.

“Have you spoken to the former president?” Mitchell followed up.

“No I haven’t,” Pelosi said. “But the fact is that we’re all on a mission for the American people, for the American people, for America’s working families. My whole passion about being in politics is for the children. So what is it that we’re doing for the children? I think that it would have been important for the children to not have Donald Trump be president of the United States. And that is, I would take every step necessary to make sure that didn’t happen. But it did. And now we have to deal with it.”

Biden expressed that in the days since Harris lost the election to Donald Trump, she had been thinking about the relationships in her life.

“We were friends for 50 years,” Biden said of Pelosi. “It was disappointing.”

Pelosi has since left her position in Democratic Party leadership in the House of Representatives after serving for nearly 15 years. She remained hopeful about her party’s future, promising that by “six or seven months, you’re going to see such a change. By the time we start our campaigns in this fall, for next fall, you’re going to see a very different picture about the Democrats, vis-à-vis Donald Trump.” Pelosi is up for reelection herself in 2026.

Biden briefly campaigned for Harris after offering her own endorsement at the Democratic National Convention. The two appeared cold with each other during public appearances in the months following Trump’s victory.

This was one of Mitchell’s final episodes of her daily newscast after 16 years. She will stay on as NBC News’s chief Washington correspondent and chief foreign affairs correspondent.
