Nancy Pelosi to join Democrats skipping Trump inauguration

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will not attend President-elect Donald Trump‘s inauguration, signaling the bad blood between the two leaders will carry into his second term.

A spokesperson for Pelosi told ABC News she would not attend the inauguration, which is set to draw thousands of spectators, lawmakers, and former presidents to Washington on Monday.

Pelosi joins a handful of Democrats who are skipping the festivities, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and former first lady Michelle Obama.

Many Democrats have pointed to the California wildfires and Martin Luther King Jr. Day events as the reasons for their absence, while others have cited their dislike of Trump and the “chaos” of the event for their departure from Capitol Hill this weekend.

Prominent House Democrats who are attending the inauguration include Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Democratic Policy and Communications Committee co-Chairwoman Lori Trahan (D-MA), Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Yvette Clarke (D-NY), and Reps. Sarah McBride (D-DE) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA).

Pelosi was one of Trump’s chief critics during his first term, famously tearing up his State of the Union address in 2020.

She was among the targets of Trump supporters who instigated the riots at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The first female speaker of the House, Pelosi said in a statement on the day of his 2024 election certification earlier this month that the riots “left behind physical scars and emotional trauma” on members of Congress and the country.

Pelosi, 84, was considered instrumental in pressuring President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, and there are no indications she will let go of her “godmother” status in the Democratic Party as it resists Trump’s return to the White House.

Her 2024 election win marked the start of her 20th term in office, and she filed a statement of candidacy for 2026 with the Federal Election Commission shortly thereafter.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush and former first ladies Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, will attend the swearing-in outside the Capitol but not the inaugural lunch.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will also attend the ceremony, despite Trump refusing to attend Biden’s in 2021 due to his unfounded claims the 2020 election was stolen.
