Chuck Schumer wants to crack down on Zyn Pouches at the federal level, promoting a nanny state
Senate Majority Leader Calls for Crackdown on Zyn Nicotine Pouches
Senator Chuck Schumer of New York is taking a stand against Zyn nicotine pouches, urging federal action to address the issue, as reported by a local CBS New York affiliate.
“These pouches are packed with problems: high levels of nicotine,” Schumer emphasized in a video. “Today, I want to send a warning to parents because these nicotine pouches are targeting young kids, teenagers, and even younger individuals, using social media to hook them.” He called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate the company’s marketing practices and the potential health effects of its products, according to the affiliate.
Zyn is just one of the many brands that produce small pouches containing nicotine powder for oral consumption. While there is no long-term research on the health impacts of these products, it is important to note that nicotine is highly addictive and can increase the risk of relapse for former smokers.
This is not the first time the Biden administration has targeted nicotine products. In 2021, they announced their intentions to ban menthol cigarettes; however, the ban was recently delayed due to concerns about potential alienation of black voters before the 2024 election.
As reported by the Washington Free Beacon on Monday, Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas warned that terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah could exploit the proposed menthol cigarette ban and profit from selling illegal menthol cigarettes on the black market.
