Nashville Shooter Messaged Friend Minutes Before Rampage
The shooter, Audrey Hale (who went by “Aiden” and was transgender), sent a message minutes before killing six individuals at the Covenant School in Nashville, TN. The message was suicidal, and alluded to plans for the massacre. Hale sent the message to a former basketball teammate, Averianna Patton, who attempted to talk her down.
Hale’s message to Patton read: “You’ll probably hear about me on the news after I die. See you again in another life.” Hale also said that she wanted to die and that “something bad is about to happen.”
Patton, who had known Hale since middle school and said she had been suicidal in the past, tried to comfort and encourage her. However, Hale replied that she was “so sorry” but “I just need to die.”
The first 911 call reporting the shooting came in at 10:13 a.m., just minutes after Patton received the message. Hale killed three nine-year-old students and three adults at the private Christian school. Hale once attended the school.
The Nashville police released body cam footage of the incident, showing officers engaging and shooting Hale, who was armed.
President Joe Biden used the occasion to call for the banning of “assault weapons,” as he seeks to tighten gun control laws. Biden also said that Congress needs to “do more.”
The Covenant School in Nashville is a private Christian school for students from preschool to sixth grade.
