Report: Teachers Union Coached Inclusion of Gender Identity in Curricula
America’s Largest Teachers Union Coaches Teachers on Gender Identity in Curriculum
A new report reveals that the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the largest teachers union in the United States, has been actively coaching its members on how to incorporate gender identity politics into classroom teaching. The report, published by the conservative Defense of Freedom Institute, sheds light on the union’s efforts to promote radical gender ideology in schools.
“Both session descriptions offered attendees ideas and action items to take back to their schools,” reads the report. “The unions’ mission is clear: train teachers to affirm every gender identity that conflicts with a student’s sex, ignore basic biological facts, hide the training from parents, and shape school policies to force others to do the same.”
The report focuses on the ATF’s Together Educating America’s Children (TEACH) conference, which featured sessions titled “Affirming LGBTQIA+ Identities in and out of the Classroom” and “The TGNCNB Inclusive School and Classroom.” These sessions aimed to equip teachers with strategies to promote gender inclusivity.
The report also highlights the close collaboration between the AFT and the National Education Association (NEA), the second-largest teachers union in the country. Together, these unions represent nearly five million public school teachers nationwide.
Prior to the TEACH conference, the AFT adopted an LGBT resolution endorsing “age-appropriate and inclusive policies” regarding transgender students’ use of bathrooms and locker rooms. The resolution also commits the union to partnering with LGBT activist groups, some of which advocate for using students’ preferred pronouns without parental notification.
Both the AFT and the NEA have vehemently opposed legislation aimed at protecting students from sexually explicit content and radical gender ideology.
Parental Rights Movement Seen as Threat
The Defense of Freedom Institute’s report suggests that the unions view the parental rights movement as a threat to their control over public education.
“The average rank and file teacher got into that field because they care about learning and they care about students,” said Angela Morabito, one of the report’s authors. “And it is not lost on them that teachers unions are actively working against those goals… The teachers unions are very clearly on the wrong side of not just what’s good for students and families, but what’s good for their own membership.”
Parents have increasingly expressed concerns about gender and sexual content in school curricula and libraries. Many have attended school board meetings to voice their objections and even read explicit passages from library books to highlight the issue.
A recent poll conducted by Parents Defending Education found that 74% of voters believe schools should obtain parental consent before allowing a child to change their gender identity, including using new pronouns. Similarly, 75% of voters support laws that would require schools to obtain parental consent.
