Native American group threatens boycott of Washington Commanders over name change.
A Native American Group Threatens Boycott if Washington Commanders Football Team Doesn’t Revert to Redskins
A Native American group, the Native American Guardians Association, has issued a strong warning to the Washington Commanders football team. In a letter dated Monday, the group demands that the team change its name back to the Redskins, its previous title. The team had recently decided to adopt the new name, the Commanders, in 2022.
Boycott Threat and Anheuser-Busch’s Loss
“Should we need to encourage a national boycott similar to what happened with Anheuser Busch which is now down $27 billion (note, not one brick thrown, not one highway blocked, not one bridge burned) – WE WILL DO JUST THAT,” the letter read.
The Native American Guardians Association’s boycott threat draws inspiration from the recent financial loss suffered by Anheuser-Busch, the owner of Bud Light and other beer brands. Anheuser-Busch reported a staggering nearly $400 million loss in the second quarter of this year, which many attribute to a boycott following a partnership between Bud Light and transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney.
Native American Perspective and Comparisons to Other Sports Teams
In their letter to the Washington Commanders, signed by Eunice Davidson, the group’s founder and president, the Native American Guardians Association highlights a poll indicating that 90% of Native Americans do not find the Redskins name offensive. The group also points out that other sports teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Chicago Blackhawks, have retained their Native American-inspired names while acknowledging the importance of honoring and respecting Native American culture.
“At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to ‘The Redskins’ which recognizes America’s original inhabitants and (ii) using the team’s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America’s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation,” the letter read.
Supporting Petition and Contacting the Washington Commanders
The letter also mentions an online petition that has garnered over 67,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning, urging the Washington Commanders to revert to the Redskins name. The Washington Examiner has reached out to the team for comment on the matter.
