NATO Chief Stoltenberg to Extend Term Due to ‘Increased Global Threats’
NATO Confirms Secretary-General’s Extended Term
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member countries have announced that Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will continue in his role for another year. This decision comes after the alliance failed to reach a consensus on a new leader.
Stoltenberg expressed his gratitude on Twitter, stating, “Honoured by #NATO Allies’ decision to extend my term as Secretary General until 1 October 2024.”
He emphasized the importance of the transatlantic bond between Europe and North America, which has safeguarded freedom and security for nearly 75 years. Stoltenberg believes that in today’s increasingly dangerous world, the alliance is more crucial than ever.
Contenders for the Leadership Position
Several frontrunners were considered for the future Secretary General role, including Britain’s Defense Minister Ben Wallace, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as reported by The Epoch Times.
Given the United States’ influential position within the alliance, candidates needed its support. However, the Biden administration showed little enthusiasm for alternative contenders.
President Joe Biden welcomed the decision, acknowledging Stoltenberg’s steady leadership, experience, and judgment. He credited the Secretary General for guiding the alliance through significant European security challenges since World War II.
Biden expressed his confidence in the strengthened and united Alliance, stating, “I look forward to continuing the work with Secretary General Stoltenberg to further strengthen the Alliance next week at the NATO Summit.”
