Navy vet Hung Cao joins GOP race against Sen. Tim Kaine in Virginia.
Hung Cao, Retired Navy Veteran, Enters GOP Primary to Challenge Sen. Tim Kaine
Hung Cao, a retired Navy combat veteran and former refugee from Vietnam, has announced his entry into the GOP primary race to challenge incumbent Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA). With a background serving in SEAL teams and U.S. Special Forces, Cao brings a unique perspective to the political arena.
In last year’s midterm elections, Cao was the Republican nominee for Virginia’s 10th Congressional District, although he was unsuccessful in his bid against Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-VA). In a campaign video shared on social media, Cao emphasized his commitment to fighting against socialist and communist tendencies, which his family had fled from.
“We are losing our country. You know it. But you also know you can’t say it,” Cao expressed passionately in the video, with a strong focus on President Joe Biden. “We’re forced to say that wrong is right.”
Earlier this month, the retired Navy captain filed his statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission, officially launching his campaign.
Cao is the 10th Republican candidate to join the race against Kaine, who served as Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential running mate in 2016 and has held office for nearly three decades. Despite the growing confidence among Virginia Republicans following Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s victory in 2021 and the party’s performance in the 2022 midterms, Kaine’s incumbency advantage and strong approval rating pose a significant challenge for his opponents.
Among Cao’s primary competitors are Eddie Garcia, a 22-year-old Army veteran and former congressional aide, Jonathan Emord, an author and constitutional litigator, and Scott Parkinson, a trusted adviser to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and a top executive at the Club for Growth.
Parkinson, who currently serves as the vice president of government affairs for the conservative advocacy group, has garnered substantial support from his employer for his Senate campaign. With their backing, Parkinson’s campaign will have access to critical resources for financing advertising purchases and hiring staff.
