NBC Journalist Arrested in Israel on ‘Very Serious Offenses’: Report
A reporter currently working for NBC News was apprehended in Jerusalem last week for allegedly praising Hamas and celebrating the terror group’s Oct. 7 attacks on social media as they were happening.
These attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of hundreds more.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Marwat Al-Azza, a 45-year-old freelance reporter, was taken into custody last Friday.
Described as a Palestinian residing in East Jerusalem by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Al-Azza had been wanted for questioning by the police since last month due to her pro-Hamas Facebook posts. Last week, prosecutors granted the police’s request.
“On October 7, Al-Azza put up posts on her personal Facebook account allegedly supporting Hamas terrorism.
“She wrote on the kidnapping of an elderly woman from a Gaza border community, ‘It’s killing me, it’s a black comedy, the old woman looks happy, a bit of action before she dies.’”
Haaretz further reported that Al-Azza portrayed the ongoing massacre as a film in which Hamas militants were the stars.
“Sirens all the time, the Jews are hiding and the Arabs are out drinking coffee on their balconies,” a post from the NBC-employed freelancer read.
One more post stated, “I feel like I’m watching a movie where the director is Palestinian and the protagonists are from Gaza.”
Al-Azza cooperated with the police and confirmed that she authored the Facebook posts.
It is not clear what charges Al-Azza may face, but the police are accusing her of “serious offenses.”
A representative for the police in Jerusalem issued a statement after Al-Azza’s arrest:
“These are very serious offenses during a time of declared war when the respondent lives and makes a living in the same country that is under attack and yet chooses to incite and glorify the horrible acts committed against civilians.”
Al-Azza’s attorney stated that she has been cooperative and requested her release, but a judge ordered her to be confined for four additional days following the arrest.

What is the significance of accurate information dissemination during times of conflict and crisis?
Fire on multiple fronts for months. The Western Journal has met this challenge head-on by investing in quality journalism and remained committed to delivering accurate and reliable information to our readers.
This commitment is especially crucial during times of conflict and crisis, where the dissemination of accurate information is paramount.
It is disheartening, therefore, to learn about the arrest of an NBC journalist in Israel, accused of serious offenses related to praising and celebrating the terrorist group Hamas. Marwat Al-Azza, a freelance reporter working for NBC News, was apprehended in Jerusalem last week for allegedly posting pro-Hamas content on her personal Facebook account.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Al-Azza had been wanted for questioning by the police since last month due to her Facebook posts supporting Hamas. Prosecutors granted the police’s request for her arrest, and she was taken into custody on Friday.
The content of Al-Azza’s Facebook posts is deeply troubling. She allegedly made comments celebrating a kidnapping and referred to the ongoing attacks as a movie, glorifying the actions of Hamas. These posts demonstrate a clear bias and lack of regard for the lives lost and the suffering caused by terrorist acts.
It is not yet clear what specific charges Al-Azza may face, but the police are characterizing her offenses as “very serious.” The police representative in Jerusalem emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that Al-Azza’s actions are particularly egregious given the ongoing conflict and the impact it has on civilians.
Al-Azza’s attorney has requested her release, and although she has cooperated with the police, a judge ordered her confinement for an additional four days following her arrest.
This incident raises important questions about journalistic responsibility and the need for impartial reporting during times of conflict. Journalists have a crucial role to play in providing objective and accurate information to the public, especially in sensitive and volatile situations.
While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it is essential for media professionals to uphold ethical standards and avoid glorifying or justifying violence. The arrest of a journalist for allegedly supporting terrorism serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible journalism.
As readers, we must be vigilant in seeking reliable sources of information and questioning the biases and motivations behind the content we consume. In a world where disinformation and propaganda abound, it is crucial to support organizations that prioritize truth and responsible reporting.
The Western Journal remains committed to providing unbiased and factual reporting on the events unfolding in America and around the world. Our mission is to empower our readers with the information they need to make informed decisions and engage in meaningful dialogue.
Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these challenging times together.
