Over half of California voters reject cash reparations for slavery: Poll.
California Voters Oppose Cash Reparations for Slavery, Poll Finds
In a recent poll conducted by the University of California Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies, it was revealed that California voters are overwhelmingly against cash reparations for slavery. The poll showed that nearly 60% of voters in the state oppose cash reparations payments, while only 28% expressed support for it.
The findings also indicated that more than 4 in 10 voters were strongly opposed to cash reparations. Mark DiCamillo, the director of the poll, acknowledged that the idea of cash reparations faces significant challenges in gaining public support.
Examining the Possibility of Reparations
California began exploring the possibility of reparations in 2020, following the nationwide protests sparked by the death of George Floyd in police custody. Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that established the California Reparations Task Force, which aimed to determine what cash slavery reparations could entail for black Californians.
In June, the task force submitted its final report to the legislature after a tumultuous public hearing. The report recommended various remedies for the country’s legacy of slavery, including monetary payments to the descendants of African American slaves. Some individuals could be eligible for reparations amounting to $1.2 million.

While the report did not specify an exact dollar amount for every black Californian, it provided examples. For instance, a 71-year-old black person who has lived in California their entire life could be entitled to $967,000 due to health discrimination. Additionally, black individuals who experienced aggressive policing and prosecution during the “war on drugs” from 1971 to 2020 and resided in California at that time could be eligible for $115,000.
Uncertain Legislative Adoption
It remains uncertain whether the legislature will adopt any of the recommendations put forth by the reparations task force, despite the Democratic supermajority. Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed support for the task force but has refrained from commenting on specific recommendations, including cash payments to black Americans.
San Francisco’s Reparations Effort
In San Francisco, a separate reparations effort called the African American Reparations Advisory Committee was established in 2020. The committee proposed providing each qualifying black resident with $5 million in reparations. However, critics, including John Dennis, chairman of the San Francisco Republican Party, questioned the lack of a mathematical formula or analysis to justify the $5 million figure.
Wide Disparity in Views
Across the country, opinions on reparations for descendants of slaves vary significantly. Only about 30% of Americans believe that descendants of slaves should be repaid in some form, while 77% of black Americans support reparations, according to a 2021 Pew Research poll.
