Netanyahu says Assad regime fell because of Israeli strikes on Iran – Washington Examiner
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on a recent visit to the Syrian border that Israel’s military actions against Hezbollah and Iran played a meaningful role in the downfall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria. He described the collapse of Assad’s government as a “historic day” that opens up new opportunities for Israel, emphasizing the importance of preventing hostile military forces from being stationed near Israeli borders. Following the regime’s fall, Israel has established a buffer zone that was previously in place since 1974. The conflict between Israel and Iranian-backed groups has escalated since the attacks on October 7, 2023, and the rapid offensive by Syrian rebels rendered any external support for Assad ineffective.
Netanyahu says Assad regime fell because of Israeli strikes on Iran and Hezbollah
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday during a visit to the Syrian border that the country’s strikes on Hezbollah and Iran contributed to the fall of Syria’s Assad regime.
Israel has warred with Iran and its proxy group over the 14 months since the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, and Syrian rebels’ quick surprise offensive made any aid sent to the Assad regime have little effect.

Netanyahu responded to the fall of President Bashar al-Assad’s government as a “historic day that creates new opportunities for Israel,” adding that the Jewish state will not allow any “hostile military force to be stationed on our borders.”
To that end, Israel has seized a buffer zone between the two countries that had been in place since 1974.
GREATEST COMEBACK? HERE’S HOW TRUMP STACKS UP IN WHITE HOUSE HISTORY
Syrian rebels toppled Assad’s regime after entering the capital Damascus, ending over half a century of control of the country from his family and offering a new opportunity for Syria to go in a different direction after years of war.
Rebels have continuously celebrated their victory by robbing the Syrian Central Bank, sacking the Syrian presidential palace, and firing guns into the air.
The government began a peaceful transition on Sunday, with Assad’s Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali announcing in a video statement that he hadn’t left the country. He also expressed willingness to “cooperate” with the rebel leadership.
Jalali was seen on video being guided by opposition fighters to negotiate the transfer of power. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham directed its fighters not to attack government buildings while the transition was underway.

Syrian government bodies quickly reflected the change.
“Today, a new page is being written in the history of Syria, to inaugurate a national covenant and charter that unites the word of the Syrians, unites them and does not divide them, in order to build one homeland in which justice and equality prevail,” a statement from the country’s new foreign ministry said, adding that it would continue to work with foreign governments.
As for Netanyahu’s comments on Iran and Hezbollah, both the Lebanon-based terrorist group and Iran have supported the Assad regime. But during the new surprise offensive by Syrian rebels, neither Hezbollah nor Iran gave aid that made enough of a difference.
Netanyahu also called the Assad regime the “central link in Iran’s axis of evil” and said his country’s war with Iran and Hezbollah made the difference in its fall.
“This is a direct result of the blows we have inflicted on Iran and Hezbollah, the main supporters of the Assad regime,” Netanyahu said. “This has created a chain reaction throughout the Middle East of all those who want to be free from this oppressive and tyrannical regime.”
