Netanyahu strongly condemns US-Iran nuclear deals.
Netanyahu Opposes Interim Agreement on Iran’s Nuclear Program
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his strong opposition to the reported interim agreement being negotiated between the U.S. and Iran regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Netanyahu made this statement in response to Israeli media reports suggesting that understandings were being reached between Washington and Tehran. These understandings would aim to partially limit Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for some relief from sanctions. However, these reports have not been independently confirmed, and the U.S. has denied any such deal.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel has informed the U.S. that even the most limited understandings, referred to as “mini-agreements,” do not serve the ultimate goal and are strongly opposed by Israel.
Israeli officials, speaking anonymously due to the sensitive nature of the topic, believe that certain understandings have already been reached to restrict enrichment and that some funds have been unfrozen.
The Israeli news site Walla reported that, according to the emerging understandings, Iran would limit its uranium enrichment to 60 percent in exchange for sanctions relief. The report also mentioned discussions about reciprocal prisoner releases.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller denied the existence of any deal, stating that the reports were false.
According to Walla’s report, Netanyahu disclosed details of the agreement during a recent parliamentary committee meeting. The U.S. and Israel have a close intelligence-sharing relationship, with a primary focus on Iran and its nuclear program.
Netanyahu strongly opposed the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers, brokered by the Obama administration, which aimed to curb Iran’s nuclear program. He was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the deal in 2018, leaving it in disarray.
While Iran claims its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, Israel views a nuclear Iran as a significant threat due to its calls for Israel’s destruction and its support for anti-Israel militant groups in the region.
Israel has not ruled out the possibility of taking military action to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
