The streaming giant has given the thumbs-up to a reboot of the NBC television series that aired for nine seasons in the 1970s and early 1980s, which was based on the popular book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The reboot series will have Rebecca Sonnenshine as its showrunner and executive producer; her previous credits include being an executive producer for Netflix’s horror series Archive 81 and Amazon’s satirical superhero series The Boys.
“Little House on the Prairie has captured the hearts and imaginations of so many fans around the world, and we’re excited to share its enduring themes of hope and optimism with a fresh take on this iconic story,” Jinny Howe, vice president of Netflix drama series, said. “Rebecca’s vision threads the needle with an emotional depth that will delight both new and existing fans of this beloved classic.”
Netflix also promoted the announcement of the newly announced “reimagining” of the classic television series on X, hinting that it will be “part family drama, part survival tale, and part origin story.” The series will also have “a kaleidoscopic view” of those who lived on the United States’s frontier.

The original series, which starred Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls and Michael Landon as her father, Charles Ingalls, aired for over 200 episodes and featured its main characters growing up as the actors aged through the seasons. The show has retained its popularity since it began airing 50 years ago, as it had 13.25 billion minutes streamed on Peacock last year.
Besides Little House on the Prairie, Netflix is also working on a reboot of The Chronicles of Narnia, which is being directed by Barbie director Greta Gerwig. The new film, the first Narnia film since 2010, will be released in IMAX in November 2026 before being released on Netflix the following month.
