Netflix debuts ‘Nimona,’ an animated kids’ film with LGBT plot.
Netflix’s Controversial Animated Film “Nimona” Sparks Debate Among Parents
Netflix recently released an animated children’s movie called “Nimona” that has stirred up quite a controversy. Despite its PG rating, parent reviewers have expressed concerns about the film’s content, which includes violence, LGBTQ storylines, and allusions to suicide.
The film, based on the popular graphic novel of the same name, follows the adventures of Nimona, a shape-shifting teen character. While she initially revels in her role as a ”villain” and causes chaos, viewers soon discover that her behavior stems from feeling shunned and misunderstood due to her differences, as noted by the movie review site Common Sense Media.
The film also features two knights, Ambrosius Goldenloin (voiced by Eugene Lee Yang) and Ballister Boldheart (played by Riz Ahmed), who not only battle for the soul of their civilization but also find themselves falling in love with each other.
Originally a product of Blue Sky Studios, the movie faced setbacks when Disney acquired Fox, resulting in the closure of both Blue Sky and the film itself, as Slate reported.

Parental reviewers on Common Sense Media have made it clear that the PG rating is misleading. One concerned reviewer pointed out that the film is “definitely not for younger children” and that its mature language and storyline make it more suitable for older kids.
Another reviewer mentioned that the film is not appropriate for younger kids due to scenes depicting same-sex kissing, violence, and suicidal thoughts. They shared their experience of how the character Nimona, overwhelmed by distress, attempts self-harm.
One parent, who found the film unsuitable for her 8 and 5-year-old boys, emphasized that the inclusion of suicide-related content should disqualify it from being rated PG.

“Slate” reviewed the film and criticized Netflix for making the “Nimona” story even “gayer” than the original novel. The review highlighted the film’s explicit gay moments, such as the knights holding hands and sharing a kiss. Additionally, it noted that Nimona’s transgender identity is more pronounced, as the character can change from a girl to a boy at will.
The review concluded that “Nimona” takes LGBTQ characters and incorporates them into a familiar narrative about misunderstood “monsters” and fear of the Other.
