Netflix Will Drop $2.5B On Korean Content Over The Next 4 Years
Netflix is doubling down on its investment in Korean content, committing a whopping $2.5 billion over the next four years. The move comes after a string of successful Korean-based programming, including the wildly popular “Squid Game,” “The Glory,” and “Physical: 100.” This massive investment in Korean-made TV series, movies, and unscripted projects will be double what Netflix spent on Korean content from its local launch in 2016 until today. The investment plans were shared during a meeting between South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who expressed his confidence in the Korean creative industry’s ability to continue telling great stories.
Sarandos is the mastermind behind Netflix’s Korean content thus far, starting with the $50 million sci-fi action drama “Okja” in 2016. That success led to more K-content, including “Sweet Home,” “Hellbound,” and “Kill Boksoon.” “Squid Game” alone raked in around $900 million in revenue for Netflix and became the company’s top show worldwide in 2021.
But Netflix isn’t the only streaming giant investing in Korean content. Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV+ are all putting money toward acquiring and producing original Korean content, too. It’s clear that Korean content has captured the hearts of viewers worldwide, and with this massive investment, Netflix is betting on its continued success. So, get ready for even more thrilling and captivating Korean programming in the years to come!
