Nevada School District OKs Elementary Sex-Ed with “Penis” and “Vulva” Terms.
Nevada School District Approves New Sex Education Curriculum for Elementary School Children
A Nevada school district has recently approved a groundbreaking sex education curriculum for elementary school children. This curriculum redefines the concepts of males and females, focusing on gender identity rather than biological sex.
The Washoe County School District in Reno voted 5-2 in favor of implementing this new curriculum for fourth and fifth graders. The decision was made after several hours of public comment, where community members expressed their opinions on the matter.
Understanding Our Bodies
One of the key lessons in the fourth grade curriculum is titled “Understanding Our Bodies.” This lesson introduces the terms “boys and people with a penis” and “girls and people with a vulva.” It acknowledges that individuals who identify as transgender may have the genitalia of their biological sex but identify as the opposite gender.
The fourth grade curriculum also includes comprehensive information about body parts, including the vagina, vulva, penis, urethra, scrotum, anus, clitoris, and nipples. Cartoon diagrams are used to provide visual aids for both male and female genitals.
In fifth grade, students will learn about the reproductive system and encounter terms such as “assigned sex at birth (male)” and “assigned sex at birth (female)” in the curriculum.
While the majority of the school board supported the new curriculum, member Jeffrey Church expressed his concerns. He believed that it would alienate and marginalize a significant portion of the community and disregard religious beliefs protected by the constitution.
“The proposal goes well beyond that by including LGBTQ+ material and changing male and female or boys and girls to, for example, ‘Girls and people with a Vulva,’” Church stated. He urged the board to reconsider and retain the traditional terms of boy and girl.
Parents will have the option to “opt in” to these sex education lessons, according to school board president Ben Smith. The Washoe County School District acknowledges the importance of parental choice and respects the diverse perspectives on sex education.
However, some members of the community have expressed concerns about the curriculum. They believe that it may sexualize elementary school children and ignore biological facts.
“My brief review of elements of this curriculum, as a mature adult, made me gasp,” one concerned individual wrote. “Portions of this curriculum are infantile, ignore biology, and would sexualize these school-age children (4th-5th graders).”
Despite differing opinions, it is clear that parents across the country are increasingly vocal about their concerns regarding sexual content in schools. Many have attended school board meetings to advocate for the removal of inappropriate material from curricula and school libraries.
