‘Never-again Trumper’ Paul Ryan says indictment would help former president

Former House Speaker Paul Ryan said that an indictment could help Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential bid and that he is not rooting for the former president this time around. Ryan made these remarks at Finseca’s annual Advanced Markets conference, where he addressed questions about Trump’s potential indictment from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. Reports suggest that the former president may be arrested this week over allegations of hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 elections.

When asked about the possibility of an indictment against Trump, Ryan drew laughter from the audience when he responded, “You know, I wouldn’t have had the relationship with the porn star in the first place.” But he quickly added, “It does seem a little petty and ridiculous the DA is doing this. It looks very vengeful and political, and I don’t think you could do anything to help Donald Trump more than this DA doing what he’s doing.” Ryan, who opposes Trump’s candidacy, expressed concern that an indictment could actually boost Trump politically.

Ryan, also known as a “never-again Trumper,” said that he is not on speaking terms with the former president and that he opposes Trump because he wants the Republican Party to win. He said that the party’s loss of governorships, House seats, Senate seats, and the White House since Trump’s election in 2016 shows that the party needs to nominate someone else for the 2024 presidential election. Ryan mentioned several possible contenders, including Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA), as possible options for the party.

During his appearance, Ryan also discussed the 2018 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which he considers his biggest legislative achievement when he served as speaker of the House, but expressed concerns about the expiration of nearly two dozen tax provisions after 2025. He believes those programs could be extended or made permanent if Republicans maintain power in Congress or the White House. Ryan also emphasized the importance of entitlement reform and criticized both Trump and Biden for “playing reckless partisan politics with this issue.”
