A painting of a Paris street scene done by Vincent Van Gogh was shown in public for the first time ever. On Wednesday, British auction company Sotheby announced the 1887 painting will be presented for the first time in Hong Kong, Amsterdam and Paris.
Van Gogh’s painting is set to be auctioned in March and is estimated to be sold for up to $7 million. The auction company said the painting was previously privately owned and had never been seen in-person.
“The painting is a true rediscovery, meaning that although it has been published in comprehensive catalogues, it has never reappeared on the market since the day it was acquired by the family who owns it,” Sotheby auctioneer Claudia Mercier said. “So, it has been more than a century that this painting has been in private hands.”
Some of Van Gogh’s paintings still remain privately owned, which made this display a historic event.
