Newly released FBI documents have provided insight into what motivated Stephen Paddock, the high-stakes gambler who carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history, when he killed 58 and injured hundreds in Las Vegas in 2017. According to the documents, a fellow gambler told the FBI that the stress of gambling caused Paddock “to snap.” High rollers, like Paddock, were previously treated with luxury accommodations and other perks, such as free suites and casino credits, but casinos began to remove such incentives. Paddock was a heavy gambler, and he spent long hours at casinos, sometimes gambling for 18 hours straight. Investigators found that he had spent $1.5 million over two years but had only $530,000 left in his accounts at the time of the shooting, compared to the $2.1 million he had in 2015.
Paddock’s acquaintance recounted that he was unhappy with the Mandalay Bay, where he had fired shots, because the hotel “was not treating Paddock well because a player of his status should have been in a higher floor in a penthouse suite.” While some have found this information to be an explanation for Paddock’s massacre, many, including Kelly McMahill, a retired deputy chief from LVMPD, believe that there is still no clear motive. Investigators found that Paddock fired over 1,100 rounds of ammunition at the Route 91 Harvest festival from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Casino in 10 minutes, leaving many wondering what could have led to such a tragedy.
