NH Gov. Sununu: No Reelection Bid
New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu Announces He Won’t Seek Fifth Term
In an engaging letter to his supporters, Republican Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire has revealed that he will not be running for a fifth term next year. This decision comes after thoughtful discussions with his wife and children.
Mr. Sununu expressed his love for serving as governor but emphasized that public service should not be a lifelong career. He believes it is time for another Republican leader to guide their great state.
Achievements and Legacy
The governor proudly listed several accomplishments that have improved the state since his initial election. These include low unemployment rates, tax cuts, investments in housing, expansion of school choice programs, and the preservation of gun rights, among others.
Previous Presidential Consideration
Just a few weeks ago, Mr. Sununu announced that he would not be running for president in 2024. He cited a crowded field of Republican candidates, the strong presence of former President Donald Trump in the polls, and his desire to maintain credibility when speaking out against Mr. Trump as a noncandidate.
In a June 5 op-ed published in The Washington Post, he expressed his belief that candidates without a viable path to victory should have the courage to step aside. He criticized those who enter the race for personal gain or to serve as Mr. Trump’s vice president.
Forward-Looking Perspective
Mr. Sununu also voiced his concerns about certain Republican policies that he considers unpopular and restrictive at a national level. He believes that discussing topics like banning abortions and removing books from public schools alienates millennial and Generation Z voters, who will play a significant role in the 2024 elections.
Despite his stance, it is worth noting that Mr. Sununu approved a 24-week abortion ban as part of New Hampshire’s 2021 budget bill.
